Inteligence:
German Shepherds were bred specificaly for their intelligence,a trait for wich they are now famous.In the book Intelligence of Dogs ,author Stanley Coren ranked the breed third for intelligence,behind Border Collies and Poodles.He found that they had abilityto learn simple tasks after only five repetitions and obeyed a first command given 95% of the time.Coupled with their strenght,this traii makes the breed desirable as police, guard, and search and rescue dogs,as they are able quickly to learn various tasks and interpret instructions better than other large breed.There is evidence that Hitler who love GSD undertook efforts to train a German Shepherd and other dogs during WW2 to talk and read.
Temperament:
German Shepherd are highly active dogs and described in breeds standard as self-assured.The breed is marked by a willingness to learn and an eagerness to have a purpose.They are curious wich makes them excelent guard dogs and suitable for search missions.They can become over-protective of their family and territory,esspecialty if not socialized corecctly.They are not inclined to become immediate friends with strangers.German Shepherds are highly intelligent and obedient.
Aggression and biting:
Well-trained and socialized German Shepherds have a reputation as being very safe.According to nthe Nacional Geographic Channel television show Dangerous Encounters ,the bite of german shepherd has a force of over 1060 newton, Rotwailers over 1180 newton, Pit Bull 1050 newton, Labrador Retriver 1000 newton,or a human of approximately 380 newtons.
Health:
Many commonts ailments of the german shepherds are a result of the inbreeding practiced early in the breeds life.One souch ailment is hip and elbow dysplasia,wich may lead to the dog experiencing pain in later life and may cause artrithis .Due to tje large and open nature of their ears,german shepherd are not prone to ear infections because there is no hair in the outer ear canal to hold debris or moisture.
Etymology:
The breed was named Deutscher Schafefhund by won Stephanitz,literraly translating to German Shepherd Dog. The breed was so named due to its original purpose of assisting shepherd in herding and protecting sheep .At the time ,all other herding dogs in Germany were refered to by this name:they thus became known Old German Shepherd Dog.The direct translation of the name was adopted for use in the offical breed registry.At the conclution Worl War it was belived that the inclusion of the world German would harm the breeds popularity ,due to the anti-german sentiment to the era.The breed was officialy renamed by the UK Kennel Club to Alsatian Wolf Dog ,after the French -German border area of Alsace-Lorraine.This name was also adopted by many other international kennel clubs.
Eventually tha apendage wolf dog was dropped ,after numerous campaigns by breeders who were woriedthat becoming known as a wolf dog hybrid wold affect the breeds popularity and legality.The name Alsatian remained for five decades until 1977 ,when successful campaigns by dog enthusiasts pressured the British kennel clubs to allow the breed to be registred again a German Shepherds.The world Alsatian still appeared in parentheses as part of the formal breed name and was only removed in 2010.
Use as working dog:
German Shepherd dog are popular selection for use as aworking dogs.They are expecially well known for their police work,being used for tracking criminals, patrolling troubled areas and detection and holding of suspect.Additipnally thousand of german shepherd have been used by the military.Usually trained for scout duty ,they are used to warn soliders to the presence of enemies or of booby traps or other hazards.The german shepherd is one of the most widdely usedbreed in a wind a variety of scent-work roles.These include a search and rescue ,cedaver searching,narcotich detection ,expolosive detection,accelerant detection and mine detection dog,among others .

Description:
German Shepherd is a large-sized dogs.The breed standard height size at the withers is: 60-65 cm for males ,and 55-60 cm for females.The weight standard is 30-40 kg for males ,and 22-32 kg for females.They have domed forehead,long square-cut muzzle and black nose.The eyes are medium-sizes and brown with a lively,inteligent and self-accured look.The ears are large and stand erect,open at the front and parallel,but they often are pulled back during movement.They have a long neck,wich is raised when excited and lowered when moving at a fast pace .The tail is bushy and reaches to the hock.German Shepherd have a variety of colors ,the most common of wich are tan\black and red\black. German Shepherds sport a double coat.The outer coat ,wich sheds all year round ,is close and dense with thick undercoat.The coat is accepted in two variants : medium and long .The longhair gene is recessive ,making a longhair variety rarer.The FCI accepted the longhair type only in 2010
